Taxonomy

From Vasco Gomez's website, check out the pyramidal classification presented as a table, mostly based on data from  "Killi-Data 2000" by Dr. Jean Huber. The foundation is Eschmeier's 1999 classification with additions on on the Tribe and Subtribe levels.

I am not 100% sure what follows is correct.  I'll make adjustments as I go.

Killifish are Oviparous Cyprinodontiform fishes.  AKA egg-bearing toothcarps.  The order Cyprinodontiform contains several families.   The egg-bearers (killifish) include the following.

Family Anablepidae

Oxyzygonectes dovii (White-eye) the only species of subfamily Oxyzygonectinae of family Anablepidae.

Family Aplocheilidae

subfamily Aplocheilinae

Many of the family Aplocheilidae are plant spawners endemic to western/central Africa.  The genera Adamas, Aphyosemion, Epiplatys, Episemion (in between the last two genera), Fudulopanchax, Callopanchax,  Archiaphyosemion, Scriptaphyosemion,  (the previous three genera formally referred to as Roloffia), Foerschichthys and Pachypanchax. Nothobranchius are annuals from eastern Africa.  Fudulosoma (subgenus or genus??) morphologically speaking, fall somewhere in between the Nothos and Aphyosemion.  Members of the Aplocheilus genus range from Near East to Far East.

subfamily Rivulinae or Family Rivulidae ??

Includes many genera from South America, both annual and non-annual.

Family Poeciliidae

Lampeyes belong to the subfamily Aplocheilichthyinae and are also from Africa.  Tomeurus gracilis is an oviparous species of the subfamily Poeciliinae from South America.

Family Profundulidae

Central American killifish

Family Fundulae

North American

Family Cyprinodontidae (Pupfish)

Includes two subfamilies:

Subfamily Cubanichthyinae

 from Cuba and Jamaica

Subfamily Cyprinodontinae

Species of the Aphanius genus are found in the region from the Near East, through the Middle East, to the Far East.  Cualac tessellatus is the only species of it's genus and are located in Mexico and SW USA.  The genus Cyprinodon ranges from Central American Caribbean countries to SW USA.  The genus Floridichthys range from Honduras, Mexico across the southern coastal US to Florida.  Garmanella pulchra,  another genus of only one species, are found along the western Caribbean in Belize and the Yucatan in Mexico. Jordanella floridae (Flagfish - yet another single species genus) are found in St. Johns and Ochlocknee River drainages from southern to peninsular Florida in the US.  The Lebias genus are endemic to the Gulf Coast of Iran and in Ethiopia.  Megupsilon aporus is the only species in it's genus, possibly extinct in the wild but native to Central America.  From Lake Titicaca and other areas in Bolivia are species belonging to the Orestias genus.

Family Profundulidae

Middle American killifish

Family Valenciidae

The single genus, Valencia is endemic to Europe and consists of two species, Valencia hispanica and Valencia letourneuxi.

Family Goodeidae (Splitfins)

The subfamily Empetrichthyinae are desert spring and pool dwelling species located in SW USA.  This subfamily consists of two genera - Crenichthys (Springfish) and Empetrichthys.
